Happy New Year

I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
In light of the global tragedy that we face currently I wonder if celebrating a new year is a proper attitude. My heart breaks for the loss and devastation of south Asia but I remain eternally hopeful and steadfast in the belief that things can get better. As we are still under the fog of shock there are tales of families reunited and rebuilding and relief aid and unbelievable efforts to survive. Things are bad but we need to find some good so we can keep going strong. The outpouring of help from around the world is one of those good things.
As I ponder the past year I wonder what this year will bring. Will the world do enough to keep the death toll from reaching a quarter of a million? Iraq is holding democratic elections this month. What will that bring?
But one big picture topic I’m wondering about is world peace. After the tsunami tragedy and relief efforts by the world community, Will this be the year that we all remember that we are members of one huge (6 billion strong) family and that we are all truly in this together? Will we finally understand the fact that it can happen to any and all of us? Will the most amazing and positive thing to come from this catastrophe be that it’s not you and me, us and them or nation and nation but just We and Us. Will old friends who have drifted apart have that relationship rekindled and strengthened and be joined by new friends?
I’m cynical but I hold out hope. That’s part of being human isn’t it? Keeping hope alive so that it will drive us to better times? What would be the effect if we all worked just a little to make somebody elses life better? Practiced being more selfless than selfish.
