Update:
“I have given up on American journalism. The decline of the American press has long been obvious, and my time is too valuable to waste in an effort to supply the ‘man on the street’ with his daily quota of cliches, gossip, and erotic type. There is another concept of journalism, which you may or may not be familiar with. It’s engraved on a bronze plaque on the southeast corner of the Times Tower in New York City.”
I was introduced to Hunter S. Thompson just a few years ago (yeah I’m a little behind) but I became interested because of his style and his influences and peers, Kerouac and P. J. O’Rourke. What I found interesting was how he got started and then his book “Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ‘72″. He started out reading and even transcribing classic literature and writing voraciously. My interest in Hunter S. Thompson almost coincides with my interest in blogging. Perhaps it influenced my decision to start my own blog and the focus of topics during the 2004 campaign. Anyway, looks like the next few months have my reading agenda already lined up since I’m needing to play catch up.
Un-Freaking-Believable: Hunter S. Thompson was born July 18, 1937 so do the math and wonder about this NYT headline The New York Times > Books > Hunter S. Thompson, 65, Author, Commits Suicide
